Three sealing interfaces
A sealed connector may include an interface seal between mating housings, individual seals around populated wires and cavity plugs in unused positions. Each interface needs the correct component and assembly condition.
Match the wire outer diameter
Wire seals are selected by the actual insulation outer diameter, not conductor size alone. Too little compression can allow leakage, while excessive interference can damage the seal or complicate insertion.
Do not leave unused cavities open
Unused positions in a sealed housing normally require compatible cavity plugs. A connector with empty, unplugged cavities may not maintain the intended environmental protection.
Check terminal and seal assembly
The terminal crimp, seal position and insertion depth should be reviewed together. A damaged seal or partially seated terminal can create both electrical and environmental risk.
RFQ information
Provide housing reference, wire size, insulation outer diameter, populated cavity count, seal or plug photos, IP target and assembly method.
FAQ
Common questions
Common procurement and engineering questions related to this topic.
Can one wire seal size fit every cable in the same terminal series?
No. The seal must match the wire insulation outer diameter and the connector cavity design.
Are cavity plugs required when a sealed connector has unused positions?
Usually yes, but the exact requirement should be confirmed from the connector drawing and intended sealing method.
